Approaching the Michigan-Indiana border, Gavin makes plans to get maps, brochures, and travel guides at the Michigan Welcome Center, on the journey home, after the art opening. One cannot access the Welcome Center when leaving the state, only when returning.
And photographing the snack machines at each rest area
Photographing the menu, not the food.
Recording Mileage distances to Chicago, and other destinations in Michigan along the way. The mention of Battle Creek triggers a memory for Gavin from May 16, 1984.

The plan is to stop at every rest stop and welcome center on the way to Sheboygan, Wisconsin, so Gavin can record mileage distances, and collect updated maps and travel guides.
The journey is partially supported by a Special Opportunity Fund grant from NYFA.
Gavin takes a digital photograph of the door each time he leaves the house, to make sure it’s locked. He deletes the picture at the end of every day. He’s been doing this since September 8, 2008.
At a bakery, that is closed, Gavin records and extends the store’s hours, by writing that it is open one hour earlier and closes one hour later than indicated on the sign. He does this for every store he visits and likes.
